Housing and Housing Allowance / Offices and Guest Rooms
The Wissenschaftskolleg will accommodate you in a suitable apartment. We have very spacious studio apartments with an adjoining office and a shared kitchen in the Villa Jaffé and larger apartments with several rooms in the Villa Walther, about a 5-minute walk from the main building. Fellows accompanied by children live in the Villa Walther. Short-term Fellows are generally housed in the main building in studio apartments with a fully equipped workspace and the use of a communal kitchen. The studios are non-smoking apartments.
All apartments are completely furnished. They are rented to the Fellows generally for the period from September 16 to July 15, but are already available earlier for Fellows who come to the Wissenschaftskolleg with school-age children or who take part in the preparatory German course.
Usually, Fellows have continuing costs for their apartment in their home country; if this is the case, the Wissenschaftskolleg grants a housing allowance for your apartment in Berlin in compensation:
- Fellows whose home universities (or other institutions) contribute at least 20% of the costs receive a housing supplement equal to their basic rent (excluding utilities).
- All other Fellows must contribute 10% of their stipend or their substitution costs for rent.
- If Fellows rent out their dwelling in their home country, their housing allowance is cut by 50% of what they receive in rent.
- Utilities (heating, water, garbage collection, etc.) are always paid by the Fellows.
As far as possible, every Fellow will be provided with a study, either in his or her apartment or as a separate office in the rooms of the Wissenschaftskolleg.
The Wissenschaftskolleg has several guest rooms serving as short-term accommodation for scholarly guests whom Fellows would like to invite for an exchange (see “Guests”).
