Patristics and Theology in the 20th Century

When Fathers Read The Fathers. Patristics and Theology in the 20th Century
In the book that I have begun to write here at the Wissenschaftskolleg, I am attempting to bring to light the relation between the thought of certain great theologians of the twentieth century and their training in patristics. I am concerned, on the one hand, with recognizing the role that reading the Church Fathers would have played in constituting their respective theological visions (topics and authors, models for living and of thought, issues and polemics, ways of interpreting the Scriptures, etc.), and on the other hand, with highlighting the original manner in which these modern theologians updated, augmented and indeed sometimes distorted the patristic bequest. Owing to them, the work of the Church Fathers has still continued to enrich contemporary Christian theology. I chose my authors according to two criteria: the recognized value of their theological thought and their patristic competence. What follows is a provisional list: Serge Boulgakov (1871-1944), Louis Bouyer (1913-2004), Henri de Lubac (1896-1991), Paul Evdokimov (1900-1970), Vladimir Lossky (1903-1958), Dumitru Staniloae (1903-1993), Jean Daniélou (1905-1974), Hans Urs von Balthasar (1890-1965), Oscar Cullmann (1902-2001), André Benoit (1919-1999), J. Zizioulas (b. 1931), Christos Yannaras (b. 1935), Bernard Sesbouë (b. 1929). My introduction will be devoted to three of their forerunners from the nineteenth century-Möhler, Newman and Soloviev.
In the first part of my talk I will briefly discuss the notion of "Church Father" and give an outline of my project. In the second part I will relate the "history" of the group of Jesuits from Fourvière (Lyon), veteran patrologists and theologians who played a decisive role in first laying the groundwork for Vatican II and then bringing it to fruition. Lastly, the third part of my talk will be devoted to Rumania's greatest Orthodox theologian of the twentieth century, Dumitru Staniloae, whose life and thought were so immersed in the patristic tradition that he was nicknamed "Doctor Philocalicus." And I will conclude my talk with a comparison between Staniloae's Orthodox, spiritualistic and sometimes old-fashioned approach, and the historic and social approach of the Jesuits de Lubac and Daniélou.
