Irony
July 4, 2013
Irony is a timely topic. In many parts of the world irony about religious matters has become, perhaps more than ever, a burning issue, generating legal prosecutions, violence, death. The context is new, the formal devices are traditional: groups inspired by Guy Debord’s détournement unknowingly follow Quintilian’s definition of irony. But a historical (and comparative) approach to irony may turn the allegedly self-evident present into a more complex, and opaque, configuration.
