Prelude

The scholars tackling these subjects have all – for the duration of a fellowship - been transplanted to Grunewald. A part of Berlin that bears alot of preconceptions, some prejudices and many more trees... Some of the yearlong visitors fall prey to it’s charming landscape of small lakes, winding streets (some even cobblestoned), woody jogging paths, and general calm not far from the city’s center. While others never warm to the eclectic mixture of monstrous villas old and new, the lack of any of the many interesting restaurants and bars that clutter other parts of Berlin, or the noticeably more people to be seen walking dogs than pushing strollers. And most know about and feel the dark history lurking behind many corners.
Whatever is true about this borough, it, too, bears the signs of ongoing transformation that are so characteristic of Berlin-after-the-wall. We thought it high time to show some of these surroundings to our readers. May they judge for themselves…
