PLUTO: Assessing data uses to advance data solidarity
18. Oktober 2023
Resumee: The public value of data use - Launch of new online tool PLUTO
Policy makers around the world emphasise the need to use digital data for the benefit of people and communities. The Lancet & Financial Times Commission on Governing Health Futures, for example, called for digital technologies to be driven by public purpose, and not by profit.
But how do we know when and where data use creates value for the public? This is the task that Wiko-Fellow Barbara Prainsack and her team set themselves. Over the last year, the team developed an online tool to support the assessment of the public value of specific instances data use. The tool can be used by anyone, such as representatives of public bodies wanting to know how they can increase the public value of their data use, or patients and other citizens who consider sharing their data for specific purposes.
In the presence of representatives of international organisations (e.g. OECD, World Bank), companies (e.g. Google) and civil society organisations, the tool was launched at the World Health Summit in Berlin on Monday 16 October. On 18 October, Barbara's team hosted an equally well attended workshop for an in-depth discussion of the tool at Wiko. A big thank you to everyone who contributed and participated!
