Beyond Analogy: Comparative Research on Pain
03.–04. März 2016
The paradox of pain lies in the tendency to think the pain of others is obvious and indisputable, yet inaccessibly internal. Your pain must be like my pain, but I can never know. This way of thinking about pain makes research in human and non-human animals intractable. The goal of the workshop is to gather philosophers, animal behaviorists, and comparative neuroanatomists to discuss ways to move beyond the argument from analogy to determine objective measures for pain in non-human animals.
